Atrial Fibrillation and Sleep Apnea Causes

Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heart beat) is a common cardiac arrhythmia. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Atrial Fibrillation (afib) share many of the same risk factors, such as male gender, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and coronary artery disease. Recent studies have suggested about 50% of patients with afib have OSA. Untreated OSA increases the risk of recurrence of afib after cardioversion treatment. In addition, the association of OSA and afib is greater than the association between OSA and risk factors such as coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure.

If you have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, it is critical this is updated on your medical history and Dr. Hilton is made aware of your condition on your next visit to our office.
