Sleep Apnea Treatment May Help Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) present with similiar underlying health issues associated with Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.  Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of risk factors that are metabolic disturbances in themselves.  Patterns of being overweight, having increased cholesterol and blood pressure, and issues with higher sugar (glucose) in your bloodstream contribute to the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.  These same variables are associated with OSA as well.  There is increasing evidence that treatment for OSA can improve these parameters that constitute metabolic syndrome.

In our practice of dental sleep medicine, we find our patients metabolism improvement directly correlates with the enhancement of their airway through our treatment techniques.  With improved breathing and sleep patterns and less daytime sleepiness, improved metabolism often relates to more efficient weight loss and eating patterns, and a general sense of "feeling better".  This can improve cognitive deficits and memory impairment often associated with untreated OSA.

If you have any further questions about the relationship of your metabolism and the potential for sleep related breathing disorders, please bring this to the attention of your physician and Dr. Hilton on your next visit to our office.
