Patients tend to notice dry mouth while wearing their oral appliances for sleep apnea. We find utilizing flaxseed oil, grapeseed oil or Vaseline applied inside the mouth as a coating prior to placing the oral device often makes the experience more comfortable.

We are pleased to announce the addition of our latest digital imaging system to examine all of your teeth, jaw bones, TMJ and sinus regions. The key is that the latest system from PlanMeca Corporation takes all of your images OUTSIDE of your mouth. For those of you who have small mouths, gag reflexes, bony growths in the floor or roof of your mouth, the conventional digital dental xray sensor can often impinge on to those areas making it difficult to capture the image of your tooth and keep you comfortable. With the technology ever improving the images taken by our new Pro Max S3 radiographic system have the lowest exposure dosage in dental radiology today. This system is the only one available that can actually “look” for cavities without putting those “bitewing” tabs inside your mouth. For those of you suffering with “TMJ” we can screen, when necessary, the actual jaw joint itself to rule out more serious issues that can come up without sending you to an xray lab for a more lengthy series. The sinus images can let us rule out if there are any serious congestion issues that may require further specialty care. “Wisdom Teeth” imaging, through proper angulation, can be diagnosed to determine the “real” need for extraction treatment. Our new high definition imaging system offers you excellent diagnostics in a comfortable manner with an extraordinary low dose exposure. Please ask us to display the system to you on your next visit. This technological addition continues to set the standard for our practice. We have added equipment that is more diagnostic, definitely more user friendly for you, the patient, and safer.

Our office is specifically designed for those that continue to struggle with “Dental Anxiety”. Dr. Hilton has been escalating his knowledge for almost 30 years in the care for those that experience this challenging condition. He is California State Board Certified in caring for people with a highly sophisticated technique called Intravenous Conscious Sedation. This is a common certification for most Oral Surgeons, but very few Restorative Dentists have taken the time and concern as Dr. Hilton has to study this advanced procedure and then qualify for actual board certification. Just know it is common and perfectly normal to have some degree of apprehension or “anxiety” prior to receiving dental treatment. Some people, however, have much stronger feelings in this regard than others. Whatever the cause, the bottom line is many unpleasant effects, including heart palpitation, high blood pressure, upset stomach and trouble sleeping the night before the appoinment may occur. Many highly apprehensive patients avoid dental care for many years until their problems become so severe that they are forced to seek emergency care.
Our office is situated on the ground level inside a walking courtyard in a complex in Woodland Hills known as the French Quarter. There is no high rise medical building to contend with. We offer covered validated parking to make your experience comfortable. We specialize in “Caring for the Apprehensive Dental Patient” from the moment you arrive. We offer an open waiting room with a completely delightful staff ready to accomodate all your needs. Our office is light and open. Our techniques for relaxation range from Nitrous Oxide to Oral Sedation to Intravenous Sedation. We have over-the-patient television with wireless noise reduction headphones to help put you at ease. For longer complex procedures Dr. Hilton works hands on with a Board Certified Medical Doctor Anesthesiologist to further enhance our scope of practice to help you with all aspects of your dental care.
Sedation Dentistry is a safe, proven method to help you accomplish all the goals you have always wanted but could not envision how it could come to fruition. Now with our modern relaxation techniques we can provide you the efficient chewing function and confident smile that you truly deserve.

TOO BUSY TO GO TO BED? HAVING TROUBLE GETTING QUALITY SLEEP ONCE YOU DO? YOUR HEALTH MAY BE AT RISK
You may literally have to add it to a “to-do list”, but scheduling a good night’s sleep is a very smart health priority one must learn to set up in life. It is not just daytime drowsiness you risk when shortchanging yourself on 7-8 hours sleep. Potential health consequences of getting too little or poor sleep can involve the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems. In addition to letting life get in the way of good sleep, 50-70 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorder, insomnia and/or sleep apnea, which ultimately affects daily functioning and impinges on your health. Consider the following:
1. Less may mean more. For people who sleep under 7 hours per night, the more obese they tend to be, by tipping hunger hormones out of whack. Leptin, which suppresses appetite, is lowered. Ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, gets a boost.
2. Your more apt to make bad food choices. Those with obstructive sleep apnea or other severely disordered breathing while asleep ate a diet higher in cholesterol, protein, total fat, and total saturated fat. Women were especially affected.
3. Diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance, its precursor, may become more likely. Five or fewer hours of sleep translates to 2.5x more likely to be diabetic, while those with six hours or fewer were 1.7x more likely.
4. The heart is put at more risk. Heart attacks were 45% more likely in women who slept for 5 hours or less per night.
5. Blood pressure may increase. Obstructive Sleep Apnea, for example, has been associated with chronically elevated daytime blood pressure, and the more severe the more significant the hypertension. Obesity also plays a role further increasing the risk.
6. Auto accidents rise. Nearly 20% of serious car injuries involve a sleepy driver-and that is independent of alcohol use.
7. Balance is off. Older folks who have trouble getting to sleep, who wake up at night, or are drowsy during the day could be 2-4.5x more likely to sustain a fall.
8. You may be more prone to depression. Adults who chronically operate on fumes report more mental distress, depression, and alcohol use.
9. Kids may suffer more behavioral problems. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is common among children who are plagued by insomnia, short duration of sleeping, or disordered breathing with obesity.

We continue to improve our ways to help our patients through longer dental procedure periods with the use of a highly functional and esthetic solution called Bio Temp Provisional Crowns. Bio Temps are prescribed when a beautiful and durable temporary crown or bridge is needed as you await your permanent restoration. Worn during your treatment period, Bio Temps act as a temporary replacement tooth or teeth. Strong and lifelike, the Bio Temps provisional restoration may even enhance the color, shape or length of your teeth, or serve as a template for your final restoration.
As a stepping stone to your final restoration, Bio Temps provide you with a comfortable interim solution that is stain resistant to coffee, tea and other food. This is very important if your treatment program requires you to wear the temporary teeth for an extended period of time (up to six months or longer). This technique is commonly used in many of our dental implant crown and bridge rehabilitations.
Made of a high-pressure, heat-molded material, Bio Temps more closely imitate real teeth than all other types of temporaries. This ensures you the confidence to show off your smile until your final restoration is finished and in place.

We can now offer an affordable whitening treatment that is so powerful and effective it can only be dispensed professionally. Proven successful at providing dramatic, long-lasting results, this new powerful whitening gel, named Opalescence Go, comes in prefilled, disposable whitening trays. Simply insert the bleaching trays in your mouth and wear for the recommended time, and your teeth will be whiter and brighter. Wear times for Opalescence Go differ depending on whether you use 10% or 15% hydrogen peroxide gel and how dramatic you want your results to be. Trays are generally worn from 15 minutes to one hour per day for anywhere from five to ten days. Over-the-counter whitening treatments, such as whitening strips, can lighten teeth. But for optimal results, you want to rely on a professional treatment. This system has an adaptable, form-fitting UltraFit tray that is extremely comfortable.
Many factors make teeth lose their luster. Genetics is one factor; some people just have whiter teeth than others. Other factors include cigarettes, dark foods and beverages (including coffee, soda, tea, and red wine), age, medications (such as tetracycline), and tooth trauma.
The active ingredient in most teeth whiteners is some form of peroxide. Oxygen molecules from the peroxide penetrate the tooth and break down discolored molecules. Because the oxygen molecules spread throughout the entire tooth, it is not necessary for the whitening gel to touch every part of the tooth for the entire tooth to be whitened.
Some people experience sensitivity while whitening, but many do not. Sensitivity does not mean damage has been caused to your teeth. It is temporary and typically disappears within a few days. Opalescence also contains unique ingredients designed to decrease sensitivity and make your whitening experience as comfortable as possible. In our office we have additional desensitizing treatments if you experience lingering discomfort.
Whitening will not weaken your teeth. Opalescence whitening gel includes PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride). Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity. Fluoride has been show to help reduce caries and strengthen enamel. Together they help to improve the overall health of the teeth.
Whitening results typically last several years. If your teeth start to discolor again over time, you can simply repeat a whitening treatment.

Dental materials continue changing for the better and we now offer a restoration that is a more esthetic alternative to the traditional cast gold crown restoration, but commands similar strength. In areas of your mouth where high function demands are required or space for a tooth is limited because of possibly a deep overbite, we can now offer you a tooth material that is natural tooth color, but yields the strength and durability of the traditional gold onlay or crown. BruxZir Solid Zirconia Crown is that material and we have confidently been placing these restorations in our practice for almost three years. At first it was launced as being “More Brawn Than Beauty”, however, now with a new BruxZir Shaded formulation, BruxZir restorations exhibit improved translucency and color similar to your natural dentition, making them a restorative option throughout your mouth.
Designed and milled using CAD/CAM technology (3D computer generation technique), the BruxZir restoration can be glazed to a smooth surface finish to reduce plaque accumulation. No more “chipping of porcelain” as this crown restoration is built as one solid piece with no porcelain overlay. A traditional dental porcelain crown is overlayed with porcelain and can chip at times in difficult biting situations.
Next time you are in the office ask us about this exciting new technology that allows us to restore tooth colored type restorations throughout your mouth.

Every day in our practice we see a patient referred from their doctor for “TMJ”. What does it mean and how is it treated?
Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders, commonly called “TMJ”, are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Over ten million Americans are affected with TMJ disorders. The condition appears to be more common in women than men. Often times headaches are associated with this condition.
For most people, pain in the area of the jaw joint or muscles does not signal a serious problem. Generally, discomfort from these conditions is occasional and temporary, often occurring in cycles. The pain eventually goes away with little or no treatment. Some people, however, develop significant, long-term symptoms.
Because more studies are needed on the safety and effectiveness of most treatments for jaw joint and muscle disorders, experts strongly recommend using the most conservative, reversible treatments possible. Conservative treatments do not invade the tissues of the face, jaw, or joint, or involve surgery. Reversible treatments do not cause permanent changes in the structure or position of the jaw or teeth. Even when TMJ disorders have become persistent, most patients still do not need aggressive types of treatment.
Because the most common jaw joint and muscle problems are temporary and do not get worse, simple treatment is all that is usually needed to relieve discomfort. Self-Care practices such as eating soft foods, applying moist heat or ice packs, avoiding extreme jaw movements (wide yawning, loud singing, and gum chewing), stress reduction techniques, and practicing gentle jaw stretching and relaxing exercises to increase jaw movement usually is an effective start to any “TMJ” problem. Medications, used conservatively, can be implemented when needed such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents or muscle relaxants. In our practice, when deemed therapeutic, we provide you with a stabilization splint or bite guard, which essentially is a durable plastic guard that fits over your upper or lower teeth. In many cases this appliance assists by lessening the force load on your teeth, muscles, and joint leading to a reduction of your discomfort.
If any of these problems exist, please let us know. We can perform a thorough evaluation of your condition to determine the source of your “TMJ” discomfort and design a plan of treatment through conservative measures to guide you to better jaw and facial muscle health.
